Fall has always been my favorite time of year, not just for the weather, but for satin shopping. I like to think of Labor Day to be start of the season for satin hunting. Meaning your average guy can walk into a store and purchase a dress without a hassle. (actually I live in SF, there is never a hassle for a guy buying a gown).
Back at the tender age of 17, I bought my first thrift store (charity shop for my UK sisters) formal dress. It was a burgundy taffeta delight made in the early 60's. Shiny rayon taffeta that swished with every movement and lined in satin. I fitted waist with a wide circle skirt. It was so out of fashion for the early 80s when I bought it. But such a thrill. I must have tried on six or eight dresses in the store before settling on my dress. I'm afraid that I will no longer fit a size 8, more like a 16-18 today, but I will be haunting the thrift store aisles looking for plus sized bridesmaid and prom dresses in satin and taffeta.

I LOVE the San Franciscan thrift shops. I've been over there twice from the UK and managed to find around 13 or so. They are so much better than our sanitised charity shops here in the UK. I've brought loads of really nice silk satin stuff home. 2nd time I went I took 2 cases, one inside the other, so that I'd have loads of room for my bargains.
The 1st thrift store I found was the one right up Haight, not far from Amoeba records, (another great place.) They had a list of their other branches which I then set about tracking down.
Mission St turned out to be a bit of a gold mine, with several excellent shops down there. I found a couple right in the centre of town, (around Hyde/Geary area,) and some really "posh" ones, (a bit pricey,) up Fillmore.
What I'd give to be there right now. I found the whole atmosphere of the place just fantastic.
The air fares have got a bit pricey recently but I will be paying another visit to SF within the next couple of years. In fact I'm wanting to take part in a round the world yacht race which usually stops off at SF. Tatra.
