I'm a straight man with a satin fetish and I like to look at women in satin clothes, but I would like to wear some satin myself. There are some cultural issues, though. At least in Europe and North America, satin is somehow perceived as a feminine fabric, maybe because satin is much more commonly worn by women than by men. Women in satin blouses and satin suits are occasionally seen, but men in satin shirts and satin suits are extremely rarely seen in the public. This is why a straight man in satin might be mistaken for a gay, at least in Europe and North America. Somehow, it is socially acceptable for both men and women to wear waistcoats with satin backs. In that context, satin is considered neither feminine nor gay.
Anyway, I'm going to buy a black or dark-blue three-piece satin suit, a white satin shirt and a satin necktie (I haven't decided the colour of the tie, yet), when I have enough money. The back of the waistcoat is going to be made of even shinier and smoother satin than the front and there's going to be an adjustable half-belt in the back.
Should I buy a ready-made satin suit or should I go to a tailor's shop? Do you know any great brands of satin suits and satin shirts?
What do you think about satin menswear?

There's a German guy on here who seems to know a lot about satin suits - his website is www.satingear.com . I've never boght anything from him and I don't even know if he is still in business, but he should hopefully be able to give you some pointers at least.
A dark suit is a good idea, especially if you go to a lot of balls/weddings or places where it is more acceptable for men to dress up. Whenever I have worn satin stuff out in the past (say a satin shirt), I normally get comments, girls seem to be more interested and often intrigued
I guess there is a combination of reasons why it is less socially acceptable for straight men probably to wear silk/satin, but I think at least one reason may be that as it is a more delicate fabric than say cotton or denim and traditionally "real" men have done more manual jobs which require more durable clothing. In formal situations it is more socially acceptable as you say - items such as a satin-backed waistcoat would be worn only to formal occasions where there is less chance of damaging the clothing! I'm sure there are many more reasons too...
