the satin material of yesteryear...

There is just something about the satin of the bygone era, the rita hayworths, marilyn monroe etc
The satin just looks so utterly smooth and shiny, maybe its the fabric of those days ?

Can anyone enlighten me as to exactly what satin material these ladies are wearing ?

I've done a lot of research on the different types of Satin thru the years. If it was pre world war 2 it was probably Silk Satin or Rayon Satin. When the war broke out there was a shortage of silk , because they need silk to make parachutes. So probably 99% of the gowns were Rayon Satin. There was one major company that developed Rayon Satin and that was The Skinner Satin Co. of Boston. Most of the real smooth shimmering satin found in bridal gowns and formal gowns from the late 30's and up to the 50's was Skinner Rayon Satin. In my opinion rayon satin is the smoothest and most shimmering satin around. Unfortunatley they don't make it anymore. It's sometimes is called slipper satin.Then along came Acetate Satin which is very smooth and silky and shimmery (I"m getting horny just writing about satin).
The thing about satin is that it depends on how it is woven. It can be woven from many types of materials and it depends on the thread count and how tightly it is woven. There is a lot of satin made from polyester now and if it is good quality it feels pretty good. The old Hollywood Starlets gowns were made from high quality woven silk or rayon satin with high thread counts and made to look very luxurious. I would love to get my hands on some of those gowns from the 30's 40's or 50's that the starlets wore in the movies. Rita Hayworth wore a black satin gown in the movie called Gilda that is the sexyist gown I have ever seen.

I love Rita Hayworth's dress in Gilda too. I watch alot of older movie from that time. I really love those shiny dresses they had back then. I fantasize about if I had those dresses ..or at least to be with the actress and touch her dress.

I wouldn't mind at least finding out myself how smooth rayon satin is back in the day, but I do wonder about how heavy it is and how it flows though. Right now, in terms of it's movement, silk satin stands out in terms of it's flowing stature. It also drapes a lot better on curves. I would think that rayon satin would feel rather heavy...plus it's only partially natural in some cases and in other cases it's all artificial...where pure silk is fully natural. I've also gained understanding that the lighter the silk, the smoother and flowing it is. Not only do I prefer silk for it's smoothness, I really love how it flows and ripples on my body against the wind. I think that is what rayon satin, even any other satin, lacks. The only real weaknesses for silk is the way it should be cared for and the expense. Those weaknesses are trumped by all of its strengths in my honest opinion.

Alot of early satin is also "Celanese Acetate", thick bridal type satin. I remember perusing alot of old magazines like Life at my grandmother's house growing up, and used to see ads for Celanese Acetate, and they would always have sensual, sexy models donning incredible acetate satin dresses.

In fact, my Mom used to have a long wool pea coat that I first took note of in the late 1970s when I was about 5 that had a Celanese Acetate lining. So fucking soft, I wish I had that coat.

I think it's like anything else, back in those days, it was all about quality. Satin, cars, television sets, stuff was just made better, finer and built to last.

Today it's all cheap shit from China. No one cares about quality anymore. There are some exceptions, but not many.

I totally agree with your comments on the old 1930's and 1940's types of satin. The only source of good rayon satin I find is now on ebay selling vintage satin wedding dresses, it is an absolute shame that this material is no longer made as it would look great made up as a skirt, blouse or dress. I personally blame the fashion houses for not promoting satin as an everyday material, here in the U.K. for some strange reason the girls just do not like wearing it, what is wrong with wearing a pair of good jeans that fit right, a good quality leather belt and a simple satin shirt or any top made from a top quality acetate satin, beats me?

When I lose a bid on Ebay, it depresses me for awhile but the good thing about Ebay is sooner or later something comes along that gets my attention. I could not agree more! I have been playing in satin for 40 years now, and have a huge collection of gowns, sheets, slips, dresses, petticoats, gloves........and whilst all of these have been beautiful to wear and slide into and cum into, they are all relatively modern. It was not until last year that I discovered the sensational joys that can be had with 1930s / 1940s satin! I have three stunning bridal gowns from that era, and the feel of that vintage satin on my shaved skin is simply unbelievable. Wearing the gowns drives me crazy, and laying them onto pillows and fucking them is beyond description. I love thinking about the woman who once wore the dress too - a real turn on as my cock slides all over the beautiful material!

I love watching all the old movies on TMC or AMC and wait patiently for an bedroom scenes. Love to see the beds covered with satin down comforters. Yes the story line is nothing like to days movies. Simple mind for simple movie!! I can't help to think if the studios still have any of these comforters in props yet?? I have actually tried to call the studios and ask if I could buy some. It didn't go anywhere but I did get to talk to someone and at least got the official NO.
